The Power of Rational Thought by VulcanMassageBadIdea The Power of Rational Thought by VulcanMassageBadIdea
This just came to me, I thought I had to share it! I have been an atheist for a few months now, and I have found that the universe is so big! It is so full of wonder and beauty and total epicness like red shift or quantum theory. This is a picture of our galactic center--it shows Sagittarius (with the Milky Way center and M8/M20 area on the left) to Scorpius (with colorful Antares and Rho Ophiuchus region on the right) and cat paw nebula (red nebula at the bottom). I got the picture from [link] which has a much better picture and is fun to look around.

Seems most commenters here are missing the point of this, which is the "belief" part. As in, the atheists universe has no god in it in which to believe so its really a play on the phrase "beauty beyond belief". It's meant to be pointing out you don't need the belief in anything to simply appreciate the beauty of the universe.

You do realize that many/most theists are able to derive just as much pleasure and enjoyment from the exact same things as atheists? They just attribute the origin and existence of it's beauty to a different source than atheists. To them it's a feat by an artist not a sensation of sensory enjoyment inside of a concrete chemical reaction.

Atheism is not about beauty, about preferring one thing to another. Atheism is about being stronger than the huge brainwashings of any kind.

Yes! And being strong and recognizing that strength in others can be beautiful.

The Universe is beautiful--I love the colors and the shapes. :D However, I don't see how this can elong to only atheists--I believe that God created the Universe with al its wonders for us to explore and marvel at. :D I still really like this picture, though~! :D

It doesn't belong only to atheists. I mean that we don't believe that a god created everything, and the universe is still beautiful (and it was sort of a pun XD). I am glad that you can still appreciate nature's beauty! And thanks for being civil and not hating! :)

Of course! :D I love all people, and, despite what most people seem to think, TRUE Christians don't yell and shout just because someone doesn't agree with what they believe--that would go completely against Jesus' teachings! :D
Anyway, I still love the picture. :D Best of luck with fuure deviations~! :D

Thank you! It's amazing how accepting atheists are in general. I never thought I could find that. It's so nice!

Atheists can get a bit nasty when theists start quoting the Bible (which is true, because it contains the word of God, which is true - Begging the Question, an informal fallacy), or just refusing to counter logic with logic, or in general just refusing to counter the atheists' arguments at all, and just repeating themselves louder and louder.
But that's only some theists that do that.
And that's only some atheists who react badly (which, I am sorry, but when theists get like that, it really does irritate me).
People are people, and individuals are individual.
I'm not sure where I was going with this, except for the fact that atheists really can get verbally abusive towards theists who don't debate properly.

On the actual image, I agree, the universe is far to... well, we don't have a word that describes just how big it is.  But it is far to enormous to even wrap your tiny mind around it - all we can hope to do is understand a portion of what is out there.  There's so, so much.
Oh bloody hell, now I'm feeling existential.
I'm just going to go and sit in a corner now, and contemplate how small we are, in the big scheme of things.

God seems so little compared to everything out there--obsessed with one species on one tiny planet. I'm so glad I've found reality--because it is so much more worthy of awe.

Welcome to the club!

The universe is an amazing place, isn't it? Everywhere you look, there's something else to explore - whether it's the stars and galaxies far way, or the stuff right under our noses. (I mean, c'mon, evolution. If that's not incredible, then I don't know what is.)

So true :iconohpekplz: Atheists tend to be very underestimated on their ideals. I have far more hope and wonder than the average Christian. Once you get past the idea of good and evil, or an afterlife, and realize the beauty of the universe, it's quite mind-blowing.
Only a few months as an atheist? Wow, well welcome to atheism, haha. Hope you're mind has been considerably freed! XD

The scientific/atheistic universe is so much bigger and more awesome than the Christian (or any religion I suppose) universe--the facts are deeper, the timescales longer, space-time is curvier.
These have been some of the best months of my life, and my mind has considerably expanded! XD

Well I'm glad! Any atheist will say that, contrary to popular beleif, atheism makes you happier. To me, it was a great sense of freedom and pride.
Oh, speaking of, how old are you? Haha, sorry, I just ask out of curiosity, I don't mean to be rude. I'm just wondering how late a bloomer you are, haha. I became an atheist eight years ago when I was eleven and in Middle School, a few years after I realized Santa wasn't real I bunched gawd together with Santa and decided tehy were pretty much the same thing, lol.
But I'm just curios since you noted you've only been an atheist for a few months. Were you Christian before?

I am still a minor, and am living in a Christian household. It is really lonely sometimes, I wonder if I've gone crazy, but then I just remember logic and evidence and physics and I'm fine. I called myself Christian, and I believed in the god of the Bible, but I didn't know so much about the Bible itself. I began to read some science books a few months ago because it was really interesting and totally awesome, and I eventually found atheist videos and Richard Dawkins' books, and the rest is self-explanatory. I'm so glad I came around to reality--it is much more worthy of awe than some god could ever be.

Ahh, okay, I thought you were in your twenties or something, haha.
Yeah, it can be tough living in a Christian household. It may be overwhelming when you encounter death too, if you were raised in a Christian household then no doubt you weren't properly taught how to accept death the right way. Religious people lie to their children and tell them the ones they loved went to another place, so the children are forced into beleiving that they're not really gone. That's really unhealthy. Human beings need to mourn properly, or they can end up really screwed up in the head, hence the fact that the people who stay religious their entire lives simply to cover up the pain of death often end up kinda crazy, like the pro-lifers or the anti-contreception idiots...So yeah, just to warn you, the first death you encounter as an atheist is going to be spectacularly different than as a Christian. But it will feel better than lying to yourself and saying, "Oh, they're in heaven now", and although death is always a traumatic thing to deal with, you'll start to realize you'll accept it and feel better about it than anyone religious.

Space is so wondrous, it can hold many many secrets just itching to be discovered. 8D Our galaxy was fine and dandy, but it is always nice thinking what else could be out there.
